Welcome to the March edition of the BRONZ newsletter. Included below is information about the changes to ACC as voted through, and a variety of upcoming events, including details about the next BRONZ meeting.
BRONZ Meeting
Next BRONZ meeting Wednesday 17th March, 7.30pm, Danish House, Rockridge Ave, Penrose. Meeting take place once a month, on the third Wednesday of the month. We would love to see some new faces so if you wish to contribute please come along.
Changes to ACC as voted through:
BRONZ submitted on the recent ACC Bill, claiming ‘the proposals are unduly harsh on the (many) people who own more than one vehicle’, ‘there is no rationale or statistical justification in ACCs attempt to introduce capacity class ratings’ and that ‘ACC are failing in their statutory duty to promote injury prevention’. The full submission can be viewed here
Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation,
and Compensation Amendment Bill As reported from the Transport and
Industrial Relations Committee
The original Bill that has been passed can be viewed here on the parliamentary website.
And below are links to various articles about the recently passed changes to ACC.
ACC Bill passes into law after lengthy debate
The proposed bill was passed on a vote of 64 to 58. Changes passed include pushing out the date for full funding of ACC from 2014 to 2019, the removal of the requirement to consider pre-accident earnings and the requirement for injured people to make use of all holiday pay owing before any ACC payments will be made.
Labour issues warning for accident victims
“A full time worker will be able to be pushed off all cover when he or she is well enough to work 30 hours a week, rather than the current 35… ACC will be able to disregard pre-accident earnings, so that a middle income person will be able to be deemed work ready and pushed off ACC even if they can't carry out the well paid work they used to do." – David Parker on ACC changes
MR27
If you wish to register your motorcycle for an extra 15 months under the existing rates, get down to the AA, an NZ Post Shop or VTNZ and pick up an MR27 form. This will allow you to register your bike for an extended period and delay the impact of the new levies until September 2011. These must be completed prior to 1st July 2010.
Apology:
New vehicle levies come into effect on July 1st, not June 1st as previously reported in the BRONZ newsletter
ACC Safety Programmes
As mentioned in the last newsletter, some of the money from the new ACC levies has been ring fenced for safety. BRONZ have contacted minister to indicate interest in being involved in the process of improving safety effectively. It is important that this $30 per motorcyclist actually makes it to those who are riding on two wheels, not bureaucrats sitting on a rolling computer stool. We will keep you posted.
